The Space
Homestead
Now that the homestead is built, Roots & Fins as a space is also still “in becoming”. The place is a sanctuary for writers, artists and other creatives. Various forms of healing and wellbeing retreats are being offered. It is also a place for tired ‘warriors’ following the calling of activism and needing deep rest.
The options how to be here include:
Writing Retreat / Creative Time tucked away with little distraction, except walk, swim and write
Solitary retreats, enjoying peace and quiet
Family time, enjoying nature and recreation with your folks
Attending a Retreat – Nature Constellations, Yoga, Dance, and other modalities
Offering your own Retreat – using the double volume space you can host up to 12 people in a circle. Recommended that people book for their overnight elsewhere and teachers / facilitators stay at the retreat. Alternatively small scale gatherings are possible with 6-7 people staying over, including the hosts.
Nature
Roots & Fins has the wish for healing human-nature relations and deep nature connecting. Francesca Mason Boring speaks of ‘becoming member of Earth Community’ once more, re-membering our belonging among ‘all our relations’.
A place by the sea, held by the windswept dunes, a sanctuary to rest, recover, heal and get creative – this was at the core of the long-held dream through which Roots & Fins Writer’s Retreat emerged.
The immersion in the nearby wild ocean is a way to waken and heal the body. Walking in the dunes and nature reserve is an opportunity to literally ‘come to our senses’.
Close by is also the majestic Kogelberg with many hikes, kloofs with natural streams and wild flowers. The Penguin colony is precious and rooted among an ancient shell midden where the indigenous people of this land lived as ‘strandlopers’. It also hosts several precious Cormoran species, and a wide variety of birds calls this coast home.
